He does not want to, but Kalib must go

Kalib did not want to leave. He shed tears. "No!" he protested. As one grows, he must learn that not only does one not always get to do what he wants, but sometimes he must do things he does not want to do. Like go to school. So, leaving his little brothers behind, Kalib followed his dad to the car as the family dog followed him.

A man and two dogs who I had not seen for a while

When Willow, the Iditarod reject Husky from Kaktovik was alive, she would accompany me on all my daily walks. Two or three times a week, we would see Tony coming from the opposite direction, walking his big amiable beagle, Barney.

Before I venture any further, I should note that it was not for a lack of enthusiasm or pulling power that Willow got dropped from her Iditarod team. She was strong. She could pull hard. She loved to run and run and run! She was fast! She was also extremely sensitive. If anyone spoke a cross word to her, she would pout for as much as three days. Sooner or later, an Iditarod dog is always going to get a cross word spoken to it and then if it sits down and pouts for two or three days, the race will be lost.

But that's not my point. My point is we would often see Tony and Barney and then after Willow died Barney died and then Tony got a wife and a couple of new dogs and I would see him and the dogs and sometimes the wife too every now and then but now I haven't seen him for months. Maybe a year. Perhaps even longer. But here he is, In the chilly morning air, walking two dogs.

I document a confrontation

Given my paucity of sleep last night and the feeling of exhaustion I am left with, I'm not getting much done so far since my return home this morning. I hadn't taken a walk for a couple of days so I decided I had better stroll through the cool air and see if it might help. As I was thus strolling, a sudden, loud, angry, barking erupted just a few feet behind me. It gave me a good start. Woke me up for a few moments.

It was this guy. He had snuck up on me. He was trying to act tough. I could see that as a tough guy, he was a fraud, not to be taken seriously. This made him all the angrier. I documented the confrontation for all of posterity to look at, marvel and wonder about and then continued on my walk.

The little dog and the man who rescued me

I heard someone shouting at the dog, ordering it to go back. But the dog did not go back – it was determined to take my leg off. Then this man came running out and grabbed the dog. He said something about how he tried to keep it home, but, "the little rodent" just wouldn't be stopped. Actually, the little dog was nice enough. I exaggerated about its ferociousness a little bit.

Little dog charges onto Tamar, ready to barking, ready to take off my leg

I got mixed up on that last photo. I was still on Brockton Street. But pretty soon I would go around the bend and be on Tamar where I am right now. This little dog just came running out from the trees, right at me. I am pretty terrified… I might lose a leg!
