The surgery did go well, clear liquids coming

I just farted. They say that's a very good thing.

That's Dr. James O'Malley on the right. He came in probably an hour after I made yesterday's post to tell me the surgery had gone very well. The colon and the polyp have been sent off to be analyzed, but since the surgery happened on a Friday we will not get the results until Monday.

To the left is Carl Bostek, Nurse Aneshetist. All that pain I wrote about in yesterday's post? He put me on something called Toradol and it really knocked it down. It was a 24 hour thing and that 24 hours is about up. So we will see what happens next.

I have probably spent 18 hours of the past 24 asleep. During my awake time, I have taken four short walks in the hallway.

They say I get clear liquids for lunch today - a nice little step toward that pizza.

Wishing you the best, BILLDAMMITNOTWILLIAM!!!!

As a person living with ulcerative colitis, I know all about the colonoscopies, the polyp snips, and the eventual possibility of losing some or all of the colon. Anytime you decide you want to talk about poop, feel free to email me.

As a woman, of course I never fart. Until after the colonoscopy, when the nurses won't let you leave until you pass gas, and in fact stand beside you like a cheerleading squad going "Fart! Fart! Fart!" and then yelling YAY when you finally do. Fortunately, I was still on enough drugs to think it was funny as hell rather than deeply humiliating.....

Here's hoping you come sailing through all this!

Congratulations on your first fart!!!! Can you see your toes again??? Half the battle is won! Enjoy the liquids. Those are used to prime the pump. It will take a while to try the soft stuff. One step at a time! Patience, patience, patience. Keep walking and farting Bill the road to colon recovery. Pizza and nuts are ways down on the bottom of the list. Dreaming is good....eating Pizza is not...for a while.

Finally, my sleepless friend, you are getting some sleep, even though this is surely a hard way to do it. May it restore you to health, and soon!

Good to see you're recovering.

In 2005 I had a perforated appendix, and after the operation I spent 10 days in the hospital until my bowel recovered. Tons of antibiotics and no food or drink for 10 days. My wife bought me three scoops of Breyer's ice cream to celebrate after that first meal in 10 days!

The next year I was diagnosed with prostate cancer during my annual physical. After the operation, my doctor gave me a double dose of Toradol for extreme abdominal pain. It stopped the pain in 10 minutes and was the last painkiller I needed.

Hope you get back to your regular life soon.

avsutton, there's NOTHING more humiliating than lying in bed for 4 days trying to pass a kidney stone and being on morphine to knock off the pain -- and then getting so constipated that a team of nursing students had to give me an enema in-bed. I have tried to forget that...but it's been 30 years, no such luck.

Bill,
I've been out of the loop for some time. Just learned of all your troubles. You are a tough bastard, that's for sure! Glad to see it all seems to be going well. Hang tough.

My best to you!
