Rex receives prayers and blessings of three different faiths, is wheeled off to the operating room in courage and humor

Shortly before he was wheeled into the operating room this morning for his third round of open-heart surgery in ten years, my eldest brother, Rex Jr., participated in a Bhuddist blessing under the direction of our sister-in-law, Pak. Earlier, he had received a Christian blessing from the chaplain here at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City and also from the elders of his Mormon ward.
"I'll take all the blessings I can get," Rex said.
Standing with Pak is Rex's slightly younger twin, Mac. Mac and Pak came from Thailand to be with him.

Rex is wheeled off to the operating room for an estimated six hours of surgery. My brother's sense of humor cannot be repressed. In this way, he has made the rest of us feel optimistic.

Then Mac, Pak, our niece Rebekah Eaves and I had breakfast at a nearby Marie Callendar's. Rebekah is the oldest daughter of my late brother Ron and flew in from North Carolina.
We now wait in the OR waiting room. Rex is four hours into his surgery.
Update, 12:54 PM MST: Surgery went well. Rex is in recover. We can see him in one hour.
