Margie and I drive to the north end of the Big Island road where we encounter two jackasses: here's one of them; a birthday

Margie and I ventured off by ourselves today and headed north. We did not look at a map first, we just went to see where the road would take us. It took us to a beautiful little village called Hawi, but we kept going. Shortly thereafter, we were very surprised when the road suddenly just ended, at this spot.

Indeed, there were two jackasses, also called mules,* and I did photograph them both but somehow this image is the one that stuck in my mind. I don't have time to picture edit so I went straight to it for this post. It wasn't so much the picture that stuck in my mind but rather what the jackass itself said to me right after I took it.

"Bill, I might be a jackass, but I sure as hell am a lot smarter than you are - and better looking too. And I have a really long..." well, I will leave it at that but, trust me, he did.

The thing is, you see, every minute that I spend working on this blog is a moment I do not spend just enjoying my very brief time in Hawaii. Even though I know there is some impatience out there, that's why the wedding will just have to wait. I can go to a single picture of a smartass jackass and put it in here real quick, along with a few words of nonsense.

But to carefully edit, think about, place pictures and compose text for my son's wedding to his beloved, that will take some time. It is now 11:14 Hawaii time and we are just settling down for the night. We must catch the 7:55 flight to Honolulu, which means we must leave this place by no later than 6:30.

I am very, very sad to go. Broken-hearted, almost. That is how much I have come to love the Big Island of Hawaii, plus the time I have spent here with family and my new in-laws.

But I trust Margie and I will enjoy Oahu again, too.

Reader WakeupAmerica left two comments to defend mules and correct me. This is the most recent: "Come on now! A mule is a hybrid, half horse and half donkey. A jackass is, well, all jackass. LOL! You're misrepresenting that handsome fellow."

I, of course, could write a few words in defense of myself but I am on the road with my wife in our last few words in Hawaii and so I will let WAU's defense of mules be the last word.

One more picture - today was my beloved daughter Melanie's birthday - 32. Lisa baked a cake for her. Now I really must stop, pack, go to bed for a few likely sleepless hours and then get up and go catch that plane to Honolulu.

Happy Birthday Melanie! May you have many more. I'm glad you got to talk with that mule. They weren't talking when we were there....too young then. Soak up every minute of sunshine and have a safe trip home. Looking forward to the wedding pictures! Just enjoy yourself! Thanks

Lovely pictures, but uh, that's a mule not a jackass (donkey).

Safe travels, have enjoyed all your Hawaii posts, brought back pleasant memories. Have been fortunate to been to that beautiful state for honeymoon and two family vacations. Hoping to go back again. Looking forward to seeing more on the wedding.

Thanks for sharing your travels Bill! Hawaii is so magical and when we are there we never want to leave, but Alaska is so magical too that we are always glad to be home! I guess we are lucky, we Alaskans to be so close to some of the most special places in the world! Congratulations to Rex and Cortney and I'm so happy that you and Margie had a vacation, together, in a place that was new and undiscovered for both of you :-)
