Things seen while sipping coffee from Metro Cafe and the question raised - the answer came at Abby's

Yesterday afternoon, as I drove up Shrock Road sipping a cup of coffee from Metro Cafe, I saw a motorcycle pull up on a side street to the intersection just ahead of me. The driver stopped, waited for me to pass then pulled onto Schrock behind me. "Oh boy!" I thought, "I might be able to get a decent picture of this guy in my rearview mirror!"

Then, to my dismay, I looked in the mirror, saw he was going slower than I was and was dropping further behind - too far away to get a decent picture.

Damnit! Why would a motorcyclist go so slow? Kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?

I wondered what to do. Should I slow down and let him catch up?

The thought was so ridiculous I immediately dismissed it.

Then, all of a sudden, the guy throttled up. In an instant, he was bearing down on my tail, like a cruise missile.

Then, so fast I could hardly follow with my camera, he was roaring past me.

Just like that, he was gone, over the horizon. I saw him no more.

Three days ago, as I sipped coffee from Metro Cafe, I drove down Sunrise past the grass pasture where the Mahoney horses so often hang out and wait for me to come by so they can shout insults at me. This day, the horses were somewhere else. Tim was out in the field on a tractor, dragging something across the top of it. I wondered just what he was doing. The ground beneath the surface remains frozen, but there had to a be good reason for it.

Today, I took breakfast at Abby's Home Cooking and so did Tim. I asked him about it. In the winter, "snow mold" builds up on the surface of the ground under the snow cover. The mold is a nitrogen hog. So Tim was dragging a device that breaks up the mold, rips the ground open a bit to let in oxygen and churns horse turds into the mix for extra nutrients for the new grass soon to grow into food for the Mahoney horses.

Regular readers will see right away that Tim was drinking from his cowboy cup.

But wait! What's that other cup?

The weekend before last, Abby and Andy got to feeling a little burned out. They found a good travel deal to Hawaii, where they had never been, took it and spent just a few days in Waikiki and discovered it to be a really crowded place.

Abby also saw the Chief cup. She thought about me, and how I needed a cup at Abby's designated just for me so we would have no more of those scary moments when I somehow get the cowboy cup and then Tim walks in and finds me drinking from it.

So here it is: Chief cup, cowboy cup. Everybody getting along.

Debby, if you happen to drop into this post you will of course want to know what the words on the cup say:

"Around this camp, there's only one Chief!"

That wouldn't be me, but I got the cup anyway.

Now, when I go into Abby's for breakfast, I better never find anybody else drinking from this cup!

Hey Bill - is this photo from Andrew Sullivan's view from your weirder window collection from today one of your driving in Wasilla ones??

Michelle, you gave me a start. I have taken a good number of pictures at the same intersection in blowing snow with a vehicle turning and my Escape is red, but this must be the work of someone else. It looks like a phone shot, and I have done a few of those too, but I see several signs this is not one of mine.

MrsGunka. Gonna be lots of long weeks without a post from me for quite awhile, but stick with me and I hope eventually to get back on track - but better than before.

Hope your projects are going well and that your new coffee mug is keeping you stoked.

Bwahahahahahhaaaaaaaa! Now that made me laugh out loud, Bill, because in truth, I said, as soon as I glimpsed that mug in the very first picture, "Dadgum that Bill! There is another Leaning Tree mug at Abby's and I can't read what it says!"

Curiosity is a turrible thing, and I'd have had to suffer a serious case of curiosity all day if you had not answered my question before I asked.

Thank you, Chief.
