Fire and ice...ing: A cake for Lavina

Melanie made the cake but had then gone off to the northern part of the Aleutian Peninsula to do a little work in Egegik, so Lisa was bringing it. Even before she arrived, the boys set to work preparing for its arrival. I don't know how, but somehow, Kalib managed to cut his finger.

I don't think it was a bad cut - I never saw any blood at all.

But it earned him a bandaid and some sympathy from his mother, so it was just the perfect kind of cut for a little boy to get.

Then Lisa came with the cake and the frosting, which she made before she left home but had yet to put on. Lynx came over to help frost the cake but misunderstood his task and frosted his face instead.

Next, Kalib and Jobe took on the arduous task of placing the candles - arduous for the cake, that is. Not for the little boys. I feared the cake might not survive, but it did - for the moment.

Rex and Jacob lit the candles.

"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you..." they sang to Lavina as they carried the cake. The rest of us sang along, too - a cacophony of joy, sung in multiple keys at once.

With help from her boys, Lavina blew the candles out - several times, because these were those kind of candles.

Happy late birthday, Lavina! We love you! What a blessing you are to all of us!

Her real birthday fell on Monday, October 29, the same day she, Jake and Lynxton were traveling from Reno back home to Anchorage, but we couldn't celebrate it then, so we celebrated it now.
